Google has announced that it is working on two different types of AI-powered smart glasses, the first of which will debut in 2026.
In a blog post on December 8, the company said it is working with three other companies — Samsung Electronics, the fashion brand Gentle Monster and the eyewear brand Warby Parker — to design stylish, lightweight glasses that can be comfortably worn all day.
One of these two types of AI glasses will be audio focused. These won't have a lens display, but will be equipped with speakers and a microphone, which will allow the user to speak with the Gemini AI assistant. The glasses will also have a built-in camera that can take pictures.
Google's other AI glasses will have an in-lens display that can show the user helpful information — for example, directions on the street, or captions that translate other languages.
Although Google says the first of these glasses will appear next year, it hasn't said yet which type that will be!
Google's new AI glasses will be competing with established products from the social media company Meta. Meta has already had success with its Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, which come equipped with speakers, microphones, cameras and a touchpad.
In September, Meta also released Ray-Ban glasses that allow the user to read messages, see photo previews and read live captions during a conversation as it happens.
This isn't the first time Google has developed and released smart glasses. In 2013, the company released Google Glass, but that product was unpopular because of its unstylish design, short battery life and limited functionality.
There were also concerns that Google Glass could be used to take videos and pictures of people without them knowing it, and Google discontinued the product in 2015.
However, Google says it has learned from its past mistakes. The new product will also be less expensive.
